FAQ

How long have you been a photographer and what training have you received?
I studied photography at the highest level graduating with a first class honours degree from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1989. I also trained with some of the finest photographers in the North of England before establishing my own business.

What is your photographic style?
I practice photojournalism - my objective is to tell the story of your wedding using my camera. I like to set up as few shots as possible, remaining unobtrusive and allowing you to enjoy the natural flow of your big day. All you need to do for most of the day is to act naturally and enjoy....

I won't ask you to do anything that feels embarrassing or uncomfortable - my aim is to record you and your day naturally and to create a timeless, stylish, treasured record.

Can you take photographs during the ceremony without flash?
Flash is both obtrusive and unflattering. I very, very rarely use flash. I prefer to record the natural ambiance and atmosphere of your day. Technically I should be able to photograph your wedding without the need for flash in almost all circumstances.

How long before we get to see our images?
I’ll aim to have your DVD delivered within four weeks of the wedding day. This might not be possible at very busy times of the year - for every hour that I spend shooting your big day I'll spend at least three hours on the editing and post production.

What is included in the price?
  • Free initial consultation at your home or convenient venue.
  • Pre-wedding planning visit to your ceremony / reception venue.
  • 8 hours photography on the day of the wedding.
  • Approx 100 high resolution, copyright free images supplied on archival quality DVD.
  • All images individually processed, retouched and toned to achieve the finest possible results.
We want something contemporary but we also want some traditional posed photos too. Can you do both?
Yes I can - one of the advantages of commissioning me is that I produce natural, candid, reportage style photographs as your day unfolds but I can also make creative and stylish formal portraits of you and your key guests.

What is included in the 8 hours on the day?
For a typical wedding, I would normally cover the following: preparations at the bride's house or hotel, the groom and family at the ceremony beforehand, the guests arriving, the bride arriving, discreet shots of the ceremony, the signing of the register, the couple leaving, group shots of the immediate families and key friends and some private time with just the couple, shots at the reception including guests mingling, the cutting of the cake, the speeches, toasts and first dance. However, every wedding is different and I'll find out as much as I can about your particular plans at our pre-wedding consultation and planning meetings.

After the wedding, what happens next?
I then edit, retouch, enhance and present your photographs on DVD (normally producing around 100 final photographs). I also supply images that are optimised for web viewing (or emailing) as well as images that are optimised for high quality printing.

As a guide, for every hour that I spend shooting your wedding I'll spend at least an additional three hours on the editing and post-production of the photographs.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?
I will shoot as much as practically possible and you may get a bit wet. At my pre-wedding venue visit I will have searched for locations that we can use which are protected from the weather.

Can we get a wedding album made up?
Yes of course, I offer fabulous, top of the range Graphistudio albums from £575. I'm more than happy to show you a range of recent wedding albums at our consultation.

Are you a full-time photographer?
Yes, I am a full-time professional photographer. Most of my commissioned work is wedding based but I am also represented by some of the most prestigious photo agencies in the world including Getty. The work that I make for these agencies are mostly used on magazine covers and contemporary novel jackets in Europe, America, Australasia and the UK. My work can be seen on the covers of several Booker Prize winning authors (including: Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood and Linda Grant) as well as many international bestsellers by authors such as Harlan Coben, Jo Nesbo, Susan Lewis, Maeve Binchy, etc.

Do you travel?
I am based in Manchester UK, and work mainly in Greater Manchester and Cheshire. However, I have photographed many weddings and Civil Partnerships much further afield. I make a charge for travel to and from wedding locations (for both the wedding day itself and also the planning day) calculated at 50p per mile as measured by AA Routefinder.

What do you wear to weddings?
I dress neatly but in a practical manner that enables me to carry my equipment, be mobile and remain comfortable.

What kind of cameras do you use?
I shoot with professional, full sensor, Nikon digital cameras and prime lenses that are extremely fast and allow me to work in most circumstances without the need for flash. Both my cameras are Nikon D3 - which can be described as the Ferrari of the camera world.

Do you shoot digital or film?
I operate a fully colour calibrated, professional digital workflow.

Do you have backup equipment?
Yes, my back-up equipment is also Nikon. In addition I use the fastest and most robust data cards available and my camera records all images to two separate cards simultaneously. All images are subsequently downloaded from these data cards to two separate external hard drives for maximum security. Boring stuff but it absolutely ensures your irreplaceable photographs don't disappear into the ether...

Do you have insurance?
Yes, I have Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance. I also have an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure as used by Doctors, teachers, etc.

Do you shoot colour or black & white?
I shoot in RAW digital format which means that I capture enormous amounts of digital data that subsequently enables me to enhance your images in innumerable ways and produce your wedding photographs as full colour, or as subtly tinted monochrome.

Do you stop to eat?
I work almost continuously for 8 hours. However, I ask that the couple provide a hot meal and soft drink whilst the wedding party and guests sit to eat. I don’t need to sit with the wedding guests – I’ll consume my meal quickly and discretely in order that I can begin shooting again as soon as possible.

Can we keep our negatives / files?
I am happy to supply all the 100 photographs as jpgs on DVD at 300dpi (high resolution) ready for printing. This is the preferred format of most high street and professional printers. The DVD includes a license granting you the right to make as many copies as you like for yourself, family and friends. I also supply web-ready files which you can upload to your own website or email to family and friends.

Contract
I have a simple written contract which ensures there is no misunderstanding between us on the agreed terms and conditions.
